Made uncanny by enlargement, distortion, and anthropomorphism, Woody De Othello’s reinventions of common household articles consider the psychological relationship between body and object. Though, it was on his first encounter with ceramic that he experienced a revelation. Born in Miami to a family of Haitian descent, De Woody has a BA from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton (2013) and earned an MFA from California College of the Arts in San Francisco (2017). Next up, his work will next be on view in a group exhibition titled "Hard/cover" at the Fabric Workshop, Philadelphia, which opens April 2021, a solo exhibition at the John Michael Kohler Center, Sheboygan WI, in September 2021 and a solo exhibition at Jessica Silverman in October 2021. Othello opened his first solo museum show at the San Jose Museum of Art in November 2019. In 2018, Othello’s work was commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission to be permanently installed at The San Francisco International Terminal.
Many of the sculptures were produced using molds that Othello created during his Arts/Industry Pottery residency at the Kohler Co. For Hope Omens, he will present an entirely new body of work. and celebrity take center stage in Marika Thunders exhibition at de boer gallery in Los Angeles.
